Data received by the developer

The developer does not collect personal information, device identifiers, usage metrics, diagnostics, annotations, or screen content through kokofocus. There is no developer-operated service, analytics SDK, or crash reporter in the app.

Draw with iPad (beta)

This policy also applies to kokofocus Companion for iPad. Pairing is optional and starts only when you create a QR code on your Mac and scan it with the companion. A fresh, short-lived secret authenticates an encrypted local connection to one iPad. The code expires after five minutes and is not retained as a persistent credential.

The Mac sends the selected display, or only its composed presentation window when single-window annotation is active, to the paired iPad. The companion sends Pencil strokes, finger gestures, tool and color choices, text you enter, and clock commands back to your Mac. These frames and inputs stay in memory on your devices. They are not sent to the developer or a cloud service, and are not recorded. Closing a presentation stage disconnects the companion rather than exposing the desktop.

The Mac requires Screen Recording and Local Network access. The companion uses Camera access only to scan pairing QR codes and Local Network access to connect to your Mac. Camera images are not transmitted or recorded. Both devices must be on the same private local network. Disconnecting, locking a device, leaving the companion, or turning kokofocus off ends the session. A new connection requires a new QR code.

Update checks and network activity

The Mac app contacts Apple’s public catalog over HTTPS to check for a newer release. Automatic checks are enabled by default and run at the top of each hour while kokofocus is on. At startup, when turning on, and after waking, the app also checks if there has not been an attempt in the current hour. Checks pause while kokofocus is off; none run when the app is quit. Failed checks retry at the next hour. You can turn off automatic checks in Settings → General and check manually from the menu.

The request contains kokofocus’s public App Store ID, the storefront region, the app’s catalog language, and the check time to bypass stale caches. It sends no account information, device identifier, tool settings, annotations, or captured frames, and uses no cookies. Apple receives normal connection information, such as your IP address. The temporary network session does not cache responses on disk; the latest available release details are stored locally to keep the update notice available between launches.

Choosing Update in App Store opens Apple’s listing. Apple handles downloading, installation, and any App Store account activity under its own policies.

Window Share

Guided Window Share uses Apple’s system picker to authorize one selected source for the session. The optional Stage Frontmost Window shortcut requires Screen Recording permission to resolve and capture the window you have focused without opening that picker. The selected window identity is fixed before capture; an unavailable source is not replaced with another app or window. Frames are processed in memory and combined with your pointer and annotations in a kokofocus presentation window. kokofocus does not record those frames or upload them. Your meeting app shares the presentation when you select it there; its own privacy settings and policies apply.

Magnifying Glass (version 1.3 and later)

Magnifying Glass uses Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit to enlarge the area around your mouse. Display magnification requires Screen Recording permission, which you can grant or revoke in macOS System Settings. The tutorial provides a link to this setting. The capture excludes kokofocus’s own windows to avoid visual feedback, uses no audio, and stops when you leave the tool or turn kokofocus off. Frames remain in memory; they are not recorded to disk or uploaded. During Window Share, the magnifier reuses the already-authorized source window’s frames.

Data stored on your device

• Your tool preferences, including colors, named custom colors, sizes, stroke weights, text fonts and styles, opacity, fills, fading, magnification, and shape modifiers.
• Your disk’s selected tools and positions, menu background, reveal speed, menu gesture, hold length, and tool, annotation-action, and direct-staging shortcuts.
• Tutorial preferences and whether controls should appear in captures.
• Whether automatic update checks are enabled, the last hourly check attempt, and the latest available release details. Older scheduling and automatic-popup preferences may remain locally after an upgrade; version 1.4.1 shows a quiet menu badge and opens update details only on request.

These settings are stored locally in the app’s sandbox container. Annotations, including text you enter in the Text tool, and captured frames are kept in memory and are not saved as documents. Smart Pen recognizes shapes locally from your strokes; it sends no strokes to a remote service. To reset stored settings, quit kokofocus and remove ~/Library/Containers/com.shutas.kokofocus.

Permissions and input

No tool requires Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission. Magnifying Glass and direct window staging require Screen Recording permission, which can be managed in macOS System Settings. The other display tools do not require this permission. Guided Window Share asks you to choose a source in the macOS picker. A newer compatible release is indicated by a badge on the menu bar icon; update details open on request. This does not request notification permission.

The app reads cursor position, held modifier keys, mouse-button state, and Escape-key state to provide its presentation gestures. Tool, annotation-action, and direct-staging shortcuts use native hotkey registration, and the shortcut recorder reads the key combination you enter while recording. Text entered directly in the Text tool is used to draw your annotations and remains in memory while you use them. kokofocus does not capture text typed in other apps, save text annotations to disk, or upload them. The Mac app does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, or personal-file access. The iPad companion requests only Camera and Local Network access for pairing and mirroring; it does not request microphone, location, contacts, or personal-file access.

What your audience sees

When sharing a whole display, your audience sees the annotations drawn over your content. For Window Share, use the setup guide or the direct-staging shortcut, then share the kokofocus presentation window in your meeting app. In Webex’s Mac picker, click the staged window on your desktop. The circular menu, brief tool-change notices, and Text selection guides are excluded from captures by default. The Text pointer badge follows this preference on the desktop. You can include them in full-display shares and the kokofocus presentation window with Settings → General → Show circular menu in screen shares.

Third-party components and tracking

kokofocus uses Apple’s system frameworks and the open-source KeyboardShortcuts library for configurable shortcuts. It includes no analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs and uses no advertising identifier. No account is required.

Children’s privacy

The app does not collect personal information from users, including children.

Your choices

You can disconnect the iPad from either app, revoke Camera or Local Network access, disable automatic update checks, leave Magnifying Glass, revoke Screen Recording permission, stop a window-sharing session, or clear local settings at any time. Because the developer receives no app-collected personal data, there is no such data for the developer to export or delete.
